AI Use and Counselling with Me
Some clients choose to use AI-based apps or chat tools for emotional support, reflection or to explore their thoughts and feelings. If you choose to do this, that is entirely your decision.
However, it is important to understand that using AI is separate from and not the same as, the counselling I provide. Conversations with AI do not form part of our therapeutic relationship or the professional care that I offer.
This is partly because:
- AI tools do not know you as a person or understand your life in the way that develops through an ongoing therapeutic relationship. They cannot appreciate how experiences may affect you over time or as circumstances change.
- AI tools do not hold a professional duty of care and cannot reliably recognise patterns, assess risk or detect when someone may be approaching a crisis.
- AI tools may present information with confidence, even when it is inaccurate, incomplete, or not appropriate to your individual circumstances.
- Anything you choose to share with an AI tool may be stored, processed, or used in ways that fall outside the confidentiality of our counselling relationship and beyond my control.
I remain fully responsible for the counselling I provide. My clinical decisions are based on professional training, ethical practice, supervision and my understanding of you as an individual - not on recommendations generated by AI.
If you do use AI as part of your own reflection or support, you are very welcome to bring this into our sessions if it feels helpful. We can explore together what you found useful, what questions it raised or whether anything it suggested feels important to you.
This is always an invitation to reflect together, never a judgement about your choices.
I would, however, encourage you not to make important or urgent decisions based solely on advice from an AI tool, particularly during times of emotional distress. If you are struggling or in crisis, please seek support from a trusted person or an appropriate service.
Remember, Samaritans are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on tel. 116 123, offering confidential support to anyone experiencing emotional distress - more information on my In Crisis Now page.
